Ember trudged along through the forest, her legs still stiff, as she headed for the mountains. She wanted a relatively high spot to start her flight. This would be the first time in a long time since she's attempted flying and she wanted to do it right.
When she got to a decent height she stopped and spread her wings, closing her eyes. She could feel the wind flowing past her, Thoughts of her first (and last) flying lesson with her mother came back to her. "Clear your mind. Let all your worries and troubles fall away from you and you will be as light as the wind." She took a deep breath and raised her wings. Clear your mind. She opened her eyes. As she exhaled she brought her wings down with a tremendous force propelling herself into the air.
Ember glided through the air like a majestic hawk soaring on the wind. At least, that's how she imagined she looked before a sudden gust of wind knocked her off balance. Still too inexperienced, she was unable to right herself and was sent plummeting into a small cluster of bushes.
"Don't get discouraged if you fail. Learn from your mistakes and you will be stronger for it."
Ember got up and shook off the leaves and petals that managed to get lodged between her scales. She then climbed back up to her starting point and tried again.
By the time she finally managed to stay airborne it was already getting late, only a few more hours until she would have to return. Ah man, but this feeling! She felt as if she could stay up here forever! I can't believe I'm really flying! I've always dreamed of flying but now I'm really doing it!
She soared across the sky, above their newly established house. She could see Andromeda carrying supplies from her ship over to the house, Catarina was over building something by her forge, and Beth ... where was she? She wasn't in the clearing or maybe she was in the house? She should be fine, she knows how to take care of herself.
Ember circled above the clearing a few times before she decided to explore further. She flew north of the house because she spotted the glint of something shiny and found a river was not too far from their abode. That's good to know. What else will I find? She followed the river upstream to the mountains.
